In most fighting games, every single character is finely balanced to the point where they will have their own advantages, or disadvantages, when compared with others.

This holds especially true to Virtua Fighter, a series touted by fighting-game enthusiasts as being one of the most well-balanced fighters available. We shall identify Goh's strong and weak points here.

Strengths

  • Posseses strong standing throw-game
    • your opponent has to guess and input 5 possible throw directions in order to escape
    • highly damaging throws, such as (70 points of damage, do three of these to win a round!)
  • Strong at close-range guessing games, with damaging basic attacks
    • hit-checkable, delayable mid strings: , and
    • standing or low throws
  • Above-average sabakis
    • Anti high/mid punch, high/mid elbow: can parry away the opponent's high/mid punches and elbows, and followup with a guessing game of attack or throw. Especially useful against characters with punch oriented moves and strings, such as Lau, Pai, Lei-Fei, Eileen, and Aoi
    • Anti mid punch: Especially useful against characters with strong elbows and mids such as Akira, Jacky, Lau, Kage, and Aoi
    • Anti low punch:
    • Anti high/mid/side kick: Especially useful against Sarah, Goh, Vanessa
    • Anti knee: Especially useful against Jeffrey, Brad
  • Decent mixups from Back-turned position
    • fast BT that gives +3 frames advantage on hit (so you can repeat it if they keep counterattacking)
    • unescapable BT throw to beat evaders
    • strong-mid () that sideturns opponent to beat crouchers
  • Basara
    • A highly damaging way to punish crouching opponents! Condition them to crouch by performing his standing throws, and then when they are wary of standing, Basara them for the win!

Weaknesses

  • Below-average ranged game (improved since Virtua Fighter 4: Final Tuned)
    • His longest ranged mid attack option: , while fast in execution and recovery, is linear
    • His longest ranged low attack options: , are relatively slow, low in damage, and puts Goh at a disadvantage even on hit!
  • Average combo potential (improved since Virtua Fighter 5)
    • launchers have long-windup animation (slow) and have low priority
    • combo followups execution heavy, and timing specific
    • dependant on weight-classes of opponent
    • dependant on foot stances
  • Poor okizeme (anti-wakeup) game
  • Slow ring-movement speed (this can be negated with dashing and crouch-dashing, however)
    • One of the slowest characters in VF5 at walking: (from slowest to fastest, , brackets denote the same walking speed)
[Pai, Aoi], Akira, [Lau, Goh], [Jeffrey, Lion], [Shun, Wolf], Lei-Fei, [Brad, El Blaze], [Sarah, Kage], Vanessa, [Eileen, Jacky]
